Beating the SARS Non-Provisional Filing Deadline: A Five-Week Plan

Beating the SARS Non-Provisional Filing Deadline: A Five-Week Plan

Every year, South African taxpayers who only earn a salary face the same cut-off: SARS closes the non-provisional filing window in October, and every year the same pattern repeats. People wait until the final week, then discover they are missing a certificate that takes two weeks to replace. A five-week plan, worked backward from the deadline, removes that problem entirely.

Who this SARS filing deadline applies to

The October cut-off applies to non-provisional taxpayers: people who earn a salary taxed through PAYE and do not have other income streams such as a side business or significant rental income. If you are a provisional taxpayer, meaning you earn income outside a standard salary and submit IRP6 returns twice a year, your deadline sits later, early in the new year. If PAYE is your only income, this SARS filing deadline is the one that applies to you.

Why the last-minute rush is expensive

Discovering a missing document three days before the SARS filing deadline puts you at the mercy of other people's turnaround times. Banks can take up to 14 days to reissue old statements. Miss the deadline because you are waiting on one certificate, and SARS will apply an administrative penalty starting at R250 a month, rising to as much as R16,000 a month depending on your taxable income, for every month the return stays outstanding.

A five-week compliance plan

Week one: gather your income certificates

Collect your IRP5 (the main certificate from your employer showing earnings and PAYE deducted), your IT3(a) if you received a pension or retirement lump sum, and your IT3(b) from your bank or investment provider showing interest and dividends earned. Check each one against your own records.

Week two: collect your deduction proofs

Gather your medical aid tax certificate, your IT3(f) showing retirement annuity contributions, and, if you receive a travel allowance, a properly maintained logbook of business kilometres.

Week three: check the auto-assessment

SARS auto-assesses many non-provisional taxpayers using third-party data and notifies you by SMS or email. Do not accept it without checking it against your own certificates first. Missing medical aid or retirement contributions in the SARS calculation means you could pay more tax than you actually owe.

Week four: fix what is missing

If you spot a gap, or a bank still has not sent your IT3(b), this is the week to chase it. It is also the week to check whether you triggered Capital Gains Tax on the sale of an asset during the year, since that has to be declared.

Week five: final review and submission

By now your file should be complete, whether you are filing yourself on eFiling or handing everything to your accountant. The pressure is gone because the groundwork was done five weeks earlier.

Why early filing protects you

Even if you owe SARS nothing, missing the SARS filing deadline still triggers a fixed monthly penalty, and it keeps accumulating for as long as the return is outstanding. Working through this five-week plan removes that risk completely.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I miss the deadline?

SARS levies a monthly administrative penalty, from R250 up to R16,000 depending on your taxable income, and it continues accumulating for every month the return remains outstanding.

What is the difference between non-provisional and provisional taxpayers?

Non-provisional taxpayers generally earn one income stream, usually a salary under PAYE. Provisional taxpayers earn income from other sources too, such as freelance work, rental income or business profits, and file IRP6 returns twice a year.

What should I do if I am missing a tax certificate?

Contact the bank, employer or medical aid that issues it straight away. These institutions see a surge of requests every October, so the earlier you ask, the better.

How do I know if SARS auto-assessed me?

You will get an SMS or email notification, and you can also check your status by logging into eFiling at https://www.sars.gov.za/. Either way, check the figures against your own certificates before accepting.

Get ahead of your compliance

Working through this five-week plan well before the SARS filing deadline means you are never at the mercy of someone else's turnaround time. Gathering your IRP5, medical aid and investment certificates early gives you room to catch errors and claim every deduction you are legally entitled to.
