Q1 is done. January through March is behind you, and with a quarter of the financial year gone, now is the moment to review it properly. Did your business hit 25% of its annual revenue target? If not, the time to adjust is now, not at year-end, while nine months of the year are still ahead of you.
If your annual revenue goal is R10 million, your Q1 turnover should be around R2.5 million. But revenue is only half the picture. A proper review means running a variance analysis: comparing actual figures against your original budget. If operational costs climbed because of loadshedding expenses, fuel hikes, or supplier increases, your revenue can be on track while your net profit still takes a hit. If you missed the 25% mark, recalibrate your sales forecasts, trim unnecessary overheads, and realign your team for Q2.
One of the most common traps for South African SMEs is confusing cash flow with profitability. Run a debtor ageing report now: any invoices past 60 days need urgent follow-up. Review your balance sheet alongside your income statement to understand your real working capital cycle. For practical guidance on managing debtor collections, see our services page.
Your gross margin matters more than almost any other number in the business. If raw material costs rose in Q1 and you haven't passed them on, your margin is shrinking quietly. Check your EBITDA for a clear view of core operational profitability. If margins are thinning, you have two options for Q2: negotiate better supplier rates or raise prices. A 5% price increase that doesn't affect volume drops straight to your bottom line.
Cloud accounting platforms like Xero or Sage let you build rolling forecasts that update continuously based on your actual Q1 results. For SARS-compliant accounting requirements, see www.sars.gov.za. For more on using financial data to drive Q2 strategy, visit our blog.
The first quarter is finished, but the rest of the year is still yours to shape. Use your Q1 data now: run the variance analysis, review your margins, check your cash flow, and adjust your financial model for the months ahead. An hour spent on this review is likely the most useful hour you'll spend this month.
